6 Worst Loan Signings in The History Of Premier League

English Premier League clubs have recently signed a number of high-profile players on loan from other clubs. A club will usually sign a loan player if they are unable to pay the full transfer fee for the player or if the parent club does not want to sell the player permanently. Many clubs have discovered the hard way that loan transfers do not always go as planned. It has the potential to be disastrous for both the team and the player. Here are a list of five notable loan signings who failed miserably in the Premier League.

1. Gonzalo Higuain

Chelsea aren't exactly experts at this, are they? Higuain did score five goals in Maurizio Sarri's half-season at the Bridge. But they were up against Huddersfield Town, Burnley, Watford, and Fulham. Certainly not the most productive six months in the career of a once-lethal striker

2. Alexandre Pato (Corinthians-Chelsea, 2016)

Pato joined Chelsea on loan from Corinthians in January 2016, when Diego Costa, Loic Remy, and Radamel Falcao were all out due to injuries. Under interim manager Guus Hiddink, the Brazilian battled with fitness and only made two first-team appearances. Pato only scored one goal throughout his time at Chelsea. In 2009, the Brazilian won the Golden Boy award and was regarded as one of the country's most talented individuals. Pato was transferred back to his parent club at the end of the 2016 season after failing to make an effect at Chelsea.

3. Denis Suarez (Arsenal)

Suarez was signed from Barcelona amid quiet optimism, but he rapidly disappointed Arsenal fans as he appeared to be well short of match fitness and contributed zero goals in his six appearances.

4. Radamel Falcao (Monaco – Man Utd, 2014/15, Monaco – Chelsea, 2015/16)

When Manchester United made a surprise move to sign him on deadline day in 2014, the Colombian striker was still healing from his injury, but he only scored four times for Louis van Gaal's side and also ended up playing for the reserves. Chelsea stepped in at the end of the season to sign Falcao on loan for the 2015/16 season. For the Blues, he only made one start. During his tenure at Chelsea, he also battled numerous injuries and was unable to establish himself as a starter. He was sent back to Monaco at the end of the season after scoring just one goal for the London side.

5. Ricardo Alvarez (Sunderland)

Has there ever been a worse signing in terms of results? Absolutely, but Alvarez's stay in Newcastle could be the most expensive loan disaster in Premier League history. After Alvarez's injury-plagued loan term, Sunderland attempted to get out of an obligation-to-buy clause, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport ordered Sunderland to pay Inter Milan £9 million.

6. Nacho Gonzalez - Newcastle

This has the potential to be the worst of the bunch. Gonzalez and the equally infamous Xisco came in Newcastle in 2008. The difficulty was that none of them were wanted by manager Kevin Keegan. He didn't have a clue who they were, in truth. Mike Ashley's tenure as Newcastle owner was undoubtedly at its worst when Kevin Keegan resigned in protest, and that's saying a lot.
